Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a fatty acid that is found in beef and dairy products when the animals have been pasture fed. Kangaroo meat contains the highest amount of Conjugated Linoleic of any food source. Pasture fed beef and dairy products are the next best source of this fatty acid.

A lot of interest was sparked in 1988 when research showed the cancer fighting properties of this acid which looked very promising. These were discovered in a clinical study that was ongoing using lab rats that were being fed fried hamburger meat. This fatty acid is obtained by eating beef, lamb, butter, and milk. Researchers also found that animals who were fed in the pasture or grass fed has much higher amounts of Conjugated Linoleic Acid in their milk than those who had been fed grain products.

Later clinical research studies with humans done in 2000 and published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed that the supplementation of Conjugated Linoleic Acid assisted dieters in reducing fat stores and also in preserving lean muscle mass. This was a double blinded study with a control group who were given a placebo. The group who were given CLA lost on average six more pounds of body fat than the group who were given the placebo. The study also revealed that in order to maintain the therapeutic levels of CLA that the dosage needed to be at least 3.4 grams per day.
Dr. Michael Pariza at the University of Wisconsin-Madison did a clinical research study of 71 overweight people. The results of his study showed that the people that were given CLA were more likely to gain back muscle mass when they gained any weight back instead of fatty tissue.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid has been studied by various research facilities over the years. There have been some interesting findings concerning this fatty acid. The results are as follows:

CLA can increase the metabolic rate. This can be of benefit for anyone who is looking to lose weight. It can also be beneficial to people who have issues with their thyroid function or other metabolic disorders that slow the body’s natural metabolic rate.

CLA can decrease visceral or abdominal fat. This can be helpful to people who have hormonal or adrenal shifts which can cause additional weight gain in the girth or abdominal areas.

CLA can improve and promote the building of lean muscle mass. Muscle tissue can help to burn fatty acids. This can help to lead to increased metabolism and further weight loss. This acid can help the body to lower both cholesterol and triglyceride levels of the body. This can reduce the risk of cardiovascular and heart disease.

CLA also helps to reduce insulin resistance. This helps in the regulation of blood glucose levels and also metabolism. This acid can help to boost the immune system as well which helps to improve the whole well being of the body.
If a person is interested in obtaining CLA as a dietary supplement, they should know that this is available at most health food stores without a prescription. However it should be said that there are no magic bullets for weight loss. A good weight loss program should include the supplement if applicable, a nutritious diet and an exercise program to get the best possible all around program for your health and well being.
Persons who have any type of chronic illness or are taking medications on a regular basis should consult with their physician or health care profession before taking any type of dietary supplement or starting any weight loss program.
